IARU Graduate Student Conference
The IARU Graduate Student Conference (GSC) is intended as a forum to enable graduate students to exchange ideas and explore collaborations for integrative research on global issues.
NUS hosted the inaugural IARU Graduate Student Conference in 2012.
Addressing a global issue as extensive and far-reaching as ageing requires collaboration across disciplines and institutions. The inaugural International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Graduate Student Conference (GSC), with the theme “The Challenge of Ageing”, was held from 28 to 30 June alongside the NUS Global Asia Institute (GAI) Signature Conference. In his welcome remarks at the GSC, Professor Barry Halliwell, NUS Deputy President (Research and Technology), emphasized the need for communication and cooperation between researchers and policymakers, and amongst researchers themselves.
The 19 participants of the IARU GSC hailed from six of the ten universities in the International Alliance of Research Universities – The Australian National University, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford and Yale University – and a variety of disciplines ranging from medicine to public policy. The 2.5 day conferences, organized by NUS International Relations Office, provided participants with a platform to exchange ideas, establish new contacts and explore opportunities for partnerships.
In addition to a keynote lecture by Professor Barry Halliwell, which highlighted the value and importance of bottom-up academic research, participants visited the Gerontology Research Programme at the Training & Research Academy (TaRA). There, the graduate students had the opportunity to engage with the research staff and elderly subjects, allowing them to witness firsthand how empirical research – aimed at disease prevention and health promotion – was conducted. Participants also heard from other ageing experts from different disciplines – Professor Peter Little, Director of the Life Sciences Institute, Associate Professor Angelique Chan, Director of the Tsao Foundation Ageing Psychological Medicine. The first formal gathering of graduate students from the IARU network since its inception in 2005, this conference is merely the first step in fulfilling an IARU initiative to promote greater connections amongst graduate students within the Alliance.
