IARU Global Internship Program @ NUS

Latest Information

Application is now closed.  Please look out for the programme again next year.

The IARU Global Internship Program aims to provide IARU students with the opportunity to gain valuable international work experience by conducting high-impact research and projects in another member university. Such internships enable students to gain real insights into their host university and provide an exciting platform to build cross-cultural understanding.

NUS is pleased to offer six summer internships in 2012:

Internship no 1:

Host Faculty/ Department

Faculty of Engineering
(Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering)

Internship title

Wireless wearable devices for tele-rehabilitation

Duration of internship

21 May to 13 July 2012

Supervisor/ Mentor

Associate Professor Arthur Tay

Funding

Internship stipend of S$300 per week (for a maximum of 8 weeks)

Internship Description

The ability to monitor and measure accurately, comfortably, and continuously the progress of a patient undergoing rehabilitation, without injecting cumbersome wires or boxes into their activities, has the potential to revolutionize health therapies and services.  In this work, we propose to develop affordable, wireless, lightweight and accessible home therapy system that will be well tolerated by stroke patients, and can be performed over the duration needed to obtain results.  The sensors will be developed with the direct and frequent involvement of doctors, therapists, and the patients themselves (the end-users), e.g. different types of sensors will be used for different exercises.  The proposed therapy system allows patients to improve their motor control by providing them with real-time feedback using wireless sensors embedded in the wearable devices.

The initial prototype system has been developed.  The current phase is to test out the devices on actual patients.  The student will need to interact with the therapist, doctors and patients so as to refine the prototype system.  Some time will be spent on data analysis.

Learning outcomes:

  • Knowledge on sensors and instrumentations.
  • Development of low cost wearable wireless devices to monitor movement.

Skills required:

  • Basic programming knowledge.
  • Willing to work and interact with post-stroke patients/ Parkinson disease patients

Supervisor/ Mentor

Professor Li Xiaoping

Funding

Internship stipend of S$300 per week (for a maximum of 8 weeks)

Internship Description

Novel dry EEG sensor system and EEG source localization system have been developed by the NUS Neuroengineering Initiative, which will make brain-machine interface practically achievable. In this project the dry EEG sensor system and EEG source localization system will be applied to brain-machine interface for Neurorehabilitation, in which the brain intentions and controls for body movements will be sensed directly from the brain for loading into robots in assisting the body movements.

Internship no 4:

Host Faculty/ Department

Faculty of Science
(Department of Physics)

Internship title

Ballistic charge transport of graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) substrate

Duration of internship

21 May to 13 July 2012

Supervisor/ Mentor

Prof Barbaros Oezyilmaz

Funding

Internship stipend of S$300 per week (for a maximum of 8 weeks)

Internship Description

In search for new phenomena and applications, which are expected, predicted or to be uncovered in graphene, it is important to continue improving its electronic quality that is commonly characterized by charge carrier mobility μ. Graphene obtained by mechanical cleavage on top of an oxidized Si wafer usually exhibits μ ~10,000 cm2V-1s-1. A recent breakthrough was achieved by using hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) as an atomically smooth and inert substrate for cleaved graphene and the mobility was observed to ~100,000 cm2V-1s-1, where ballistic charge transport is expected.

Learning outcomes:

  • Designing and fabricating nanodevices
  • Performing measurements and analyzing data
  • Understanding and presenting your results
  • How to solve research problems independently

Skills required:

  • Good communication skills
  • Self motivated and proactive
  • Have a high level of integrity, drive and sense of urgency
  • Experiences on UHV, optical/e-beam lithography, electrical measurements and lock-in amplifier are preferred.
  • Labview programming is preferred

Any Other Information/ Requirements

This position is only open to students from Yale University.

Internship no 5:

Host Faculty/ Department

NUS Museum

Internship title

Camping and Tramping through the Colonial Archive: The Museum in Malaya

Duration of internship

21 May to 13 July 2012

Supervisor/ Mentor

Mr Shabbir Hussain Mustafa

Funding

Internship stipend of S$300 per week (for a maximum of 8 weeks)

Internship Description

The term Camping and Tramping is inspired by a lesser-known 19th century document compiled by a British officer describing the fieldwork and travails of his time with the colonial office in Malaya. The two year long exhibition (January 2011 to December 2012) traces the rise of the ‘Museum’ in British Malaya not just as an indicator of power over what was gazed upon as the ‘exotic’ but to also unravel how the very advent of the Museum resulted in a staging ground for a project of accumulation and the ordering of knowledge.

The project will revisit historical and archival texts on Museology in colonial Malaya, with the hope of working towards a multi-volume publication project, which will take the form of edited thematized anthologies.

Learning outcomes:

  • Exposure to themes and debates in Museology in Southeast Asia;
  • Understanding the editorial process and clearance of copyrighted materials prior to publication
  • Bibliographical and archival work

Skills required:

  • Interest in Archival and Bibliographical Work with specific reference to Southeast Asian Art and Museology

Any Other Information/ Requirements

Under the supervision of the internship mentor, this internship will require the applicant to gather materials from the archives relating to Museums in Singapore and the Malaysian Peninsula, the Federated States of Sabah and Sarawak and any other research work related to the project.
