AUN Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest

The AUN Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest is an annual event, organized as part of the activities under the ASEAN University Network (AUN).  There are four objectives for the event:

 
  • To promote the ASEAN spirit through cooperation among young ASEAN nationals in academic and non-academic activities. 
  • To provide opportunities for young ASEAN students to acquire knowledge, values and attitudes from other ASEAN nationals. 
  • To create networks of friendship among participants that would further develop into academic collaborative networks.  
  • To provide a platform for ASEAN youth to express their concerns for ASEAN and their perception of its future.

AUN Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest 2012

‘Global Citizenship and Intercultural Competence’

Venue: Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Date: 24-30 June 2012

Program Description & Objectives

The AUN Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest will be hosted by the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, from 24 to 30 June 2012. 

Only one student is nominated for the Educational Forum and only one is nominated for the Young Speakers Contest.  The participating student for the Educational Forum portion of the event is required to submit a 1,500 word paper.  The student is will be asked to give a 10 minute oral presentation of their paper at the forum.  A panel (round table) will then be open after the presentation and the students will be given a chance to discuss the relevant issues.  The participants involved in the Educational Forum will also be responsible for coming up with a Country Recommendation and the ASEAN+3 Youth Joint Statement which will be submitted to the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth for reference and further action.

The nominated participant for the Young Speakers Contest is required to submit a 2,000 word paper reflecting the theme of the contest.  The participant will be requested to present their speech which is relevant to the main theme.  The oral presentation should not exceed 10 minutes in length.  Presentations will be scored in terms of content and participants’ oratorical skills.

Program Expenses

NUS will sponsor 2 USP students for their air travel and accommodation.   Participants are responsible for their own personal expenses. 


Accommodation

Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City will provide the accommodations, local transportation, and meals for all participants. 


Application Criteria

Students participating in the Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest must:

 
  • Be a current student of the AUN member universities, preferably in the second or third year of study.
  • Be an ASEAN citizen
  • Be a part of the University Scholars Programme (USP)
  • Possess sound knowledge of ASEAN and East Asia
  • Be a good team player with good communication skills
  • Be a healthy person with an ability to adapt to change
  • Possess good command of the English language
  • Be committed to attend the program for the duration of 7 days.

 

Application Process

IRO works with University Scholars Programme (USP) to select participants for the event. Interested USP students can approach the USP Office to indicate your interest. Application period usually starts in March

The main objective of the AUN is to strengthen the existing network of co-operation among leading universities in ASEAN.  This is done by promoting co-operation and solidarity among ASEAN scholars and academicians, developing academic and professional human resource, and promoting information dissemination among ASEAN academic community.
