12th APRU Doctoral Students Program
‘Innovation: Fostering Sustainable Development
and Harmony among
Pacific Rim Communities’
Venue: Tsinghua University, China
Date: 4-7 July 2011
Program Description & Objectives
The APRU DSC is a major international academic event. Since 2000, various doctoral students from APRU universities have gathered every year to explore an array of issues, share their insights, and search for answers to global problems. The APRU DSC has been an inspiring and fascinating experience for its participants through its dynamic academic exchanges and the cultural exposure gained at the hosting country.
The hosting university for this year’s APRU DSC is Tsinghua University. Tsinghua University is situated around Tsinghua garden, originally an imperial garden of Qing dynasty, in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing. The University was instituted in 1911, originally under the name of Tsinghua Xuetang, as a preparatory school for students who would be sent by the government to study in the United States. It was funded by part of the Boxer Indemnity reverted to China by the U. S. Government. It was renamed Tsinghua School in 1912. In 1925, the school started university-level education and became the National Tsinghua University in 1928.
Participants who will go to Tsinghua University for this year’s DSC will be selected based on their abstracts. Those participants whose abstracts are accepted will present their research findings in paper sessions, engage in intellectual exchange with the keynote speakers, and discuss up-to-date development in their research field in special workshops designed by students. They will also have the opportunity to explore parts of the ancient city of Beijing.
The main theme of the 12th DSC is “Innovation: Fostering Sustainable Development and Harmony among Pacific Rim communities”. Six sub-themes fit within the framework of the main theme.
These sub-themes are:
1) promoting human development through inclusive growth;
2) innovation of science and technology;
3) globalization and international cooperation;
4) maintaining sustainable development through education, culture and art;
5) life sciences and health;
6) youth’s responsibilities and leadership. Abstracts are to be submitted under these sub-themes
