The IARU Summer Internships aims to provide IARU students with the opportunity to gain a valuable international work experience by tackling a project in another IARU university. Such internships will give students real insight into our respective universities.
NUS is pleased to offer three summer internships for students from IARU member universities from 25 May – 18 July 2009 (8 weeks):
Internship no 1:
Host Faculty/ Department |
Physics |
Vacancy |
01 |
Period |
25 May – 18 July 2009 |
Project Title |
Fabrication of Nanofluidic channels for DNA analysis |
Project Description |
Lithographic techniques will be used to create a master in resist polymers. This master will be tested on its functionality to replicate nano fluidic channels through nano imprinting and PDMS soft lithography.
These channels will be used to study fundamental characteristics of DNA. |
Skills Required
(e.g. languages, subject-specific skills) |
English language skills
Experimental physics or engineering background. |
Supervisor/ Mentor
(to oversee the student's work during the internship) |
Assistant Professor Dr. Jeroen A. van Kan
Centre for Ion Beam Applications
Department of Physics, NUS |
Internship no 2:
Host Faculty/ Department |
Physics |
Vacancy |
01 |
Period |
25 May – 18 July 2009 |
Project Title |
Fabrication of controlled nano gaps for enhanced Raman signals |
Project Description |
Proton beam writing will be used to fabricate a template for Au electroplating. The goal is to fabricate several Au pillars in very close proximity (less than 100 nm) and functionalize them. In this way we plan to create surface topography that can enhance Raman signals in a controlled way. |
