Santander Undergraduate Research Exchange (SURE) Programme
 

What is this programme about?

NUS and selected partner universities in Asia, the Americas and Europe are collaborating on the NUS Santander Undergraduate Research Exchange (SURE) Programme. The SURE Programme allows young researchers at NUS and Tsinghua University (China), Brown University (USA) and Imperial College London (UK) to spend the summer at the partner University’s laboratories conducting supervised research work. Selected participants will receive the SURE Programme scholarship worth US$2,000 each, sponsored by Banco Santander.

When does the programme take place?

May - August 2012

The attachment should last for a minimum of eight weeks. Preparatory work at home prior to departure might be required at the discretion of supervisors and will not count towards 8 week requirement. Students are to negotiate exact start and end date with their host professors.

The SURE Programme offers research opportunities with the following partner universities:

Tsinghua University
Beijing, China

Founded in 1911, Tsinghua University is one of the esteemed research universities in the world. Tsinghua now has 17 schools and 56 departments with faculties in science, engineering, the humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. It currently employs over 4,000 faculty members, including 1,345 professors and 1,995 associate professors. Among them, there are 37 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 34 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Brown University
Providence, Rhode Island, USA

Located in historic Providence, Rhode Island and founded in 1764, Brown University is the seventh-oldest college in the United States. Brown is an independent, coeducational Ivy League institution comprising both undergraduate and graduate programs, and a leading research university with students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

Imperial College London
London, UK

Consistently rated amongst the world’s best universities, Imperial College London (ICL) came 7th in the QS World University Rankings in 2011. Imperial College London is a science-based institution with a reputation for excellence in science, technology, medicine and engineering. It is one of the most male-dominated universities in the UK.

 

What is the research content?

Multi-disciplinary research opportunities across all faculties.

Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the attachment is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.


What is the student accommodation?

Students will be housed in on-campus accommodation secured through the partner universities after successful placement in the programme.

Is financial assistance available?

Selected students participating in the program will be provided with a Santander scholarship of US$2,000.  Up to three scholarships are available for NUS students going to each of the eligible SURE partner universities.


How many placements are available?

Up to three placements per SURE partner university for summer 2012.


What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • NUS undergraduates who have completed at least one year of study at NUS prior to participating in this programme.
  • Students should not be in their graduating semester prior to participating in this programme.
  • CAP of 3.5 and above.

 

Is a visa required?

A student visa will be required, subjected to the governing laws of each country. Students are to consult the respective embassies in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have proper entry documents for all countries they plan to visit as part of this programme!


How do I apply?

Applications are now closed for 2012.

Applications and Required Documents:

 
  • Students are to submit the following documents to their faculty SEP coordinators:
   
  • NUS IRO Programme Application Form.
  • Partner University Application Form.
  • A personal statement detailing your preferred research topic/project at the SURE partner university, the relevant skills you possess and your academic background.
  • Your latest CV/resume.
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member of NUS.
  • A copy of your latest unofficial NUS transcript.


Your home faculty will review your application and nominate selected students to IRO. IRO will contact nominated students about the status of their application in April 2012.
