Awards & Scholarships for Incoming Students

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Who is eligible to apply for the DUO awards?

The award is open to all students from NUS’ Student Exchange Program partner universities in European ASEM-member countries, who have been selected by their home universities to come to NUS as Exchange Students. Please check with your International Office/Study Abroad Office on whether your university has a bilateral student exchange agreement with NUS.

2. How much will I receive if I am selected for the DUO award?

Each selected undergraduate student will be awarded 4,000 Euros regardless of one semester or one year of exchange, which will include airfare, accommodation, living expenses, etc.

3. Is DUO application separate from SEP application?

Yes. DUO is a form of financial aid to defray your cost of coming to NUS for Exchange. Please submit your DUO application form with the supporting documents to the International Relations Office.

4. Can postgraduate students apply for the DUO?

No, at the moment, NUS is not accepting DUO-Singapore applications from postgraduates coming for specific faculty-level exchange such as MBA exchange, research attachments and internships etc. The DUO Award is a highly competitive award, which receives hundreds of applications for a limited number of awards each year. NUS utilizes the DUO Awards primarily for the undergraduate student exchange programme (SEP). However, if you are a postgraduate who has been nominated by your home university to come to NUS for student exchange, you can apply for the DUO Award.

5. When are the deadlines for SEP application and for the DUO?

The application deadlines for incoming exchange students are 15 April for entry in Semester 1 (August - December) and 1 October for entry in Semester 2 (January - May). Please refer to the section for Exchange Students at http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/edu/ng.html for more information on applications to come to NUS as an Exchange Student.

However, please note that there is only one application period for the DUO awards. The deadline for each academic year is 15 March.

6. The application form asks for "NAME OF HOST INSTITUTION". Who will be my Host Institution?

Your Host Institution will be “National University of Singapore”.

7. In the application form, under the "CHOICE OF SUBJECTS", does NUS have any kind of brochure telling students about the subjects that are available at NUS? I would like to enquire where I may get information on these subjects.

Please refer to http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/edu/ng.html#academic for a list of NUS modules available to Exchange Students. You may then check http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/nusbulletin/index.html for the module descriptions. Alternatively please check out the NUS website at http://www.nus.edu.sg particularly the websites of the faculties/departments you wish to pursue modules in, to explore the courses/modules that you would like to take during your time at NUS. You will be asked to specify these modules in your application to come to NUS as an Exchange Student.

Regarding the subjects that you can take during your student exchange, please remember that it is best to exercise flexibility in this matter. You may later add or drop some of these modules, as it is often difficult to confirm all your courses before you arrive and register at your host university.

For the DUO Award application form, you are allowed to put down your provisional modules. The purpose of filling out this column is to show that you have researched on the modules of the host university which are suitable for your SEP. It is not an issue for the DUO Award application if you eventually take other modules instead after arrival.

8. Section 2 of the application form requires us to submit certified copies of our educational qualifications. How can I get these copies certified?

You may certify the copies at your faculty/school Dean’s Office, by presenting the original document together with the copy to be certified so they can certify with a stamp that the copies came from the originals.

Please note that you are supposed to only give copies of your education certificates only from the past 3 years. Your transcript or university exam results should be provided as well.

9. Section 2 of the application form requires us to submit documents that are not in English, to be certified in English translation. Is it necessary?

Yes. All documents which are not in English must be submitted and certified in English translation otherwise your DUO application is void. It is sufficient for you to translate the non-English copies and get the stamp from your Dean's office to certify that it is the same as an original.

10. Section 10 requires verification by home university. How can I obtain the verification?

You may approach your home International Relations Office to obtain the verification.

11. I understand that the DUO awards will only be given to pairs of students coming from and going to the same universities on SEP. Must we therefore submit our applications together with a student from our host university?

No. You can simply submit your DUO application as an individual - you do not need to submit it together with a student from your host university. It is not the student’s responsibility to match the incoming and outgoing students to make the pair. NUS International Relations Office will see to the pairing of applications.

You might want to know exactly your chances of being paired with an NUS exchange student to your home university. Generally, NUS partner universities who are sending their students to NUS for exchange will also be receiving NUS exchange students every academic year.

Please understand that NUS students going to your home university may go for exchange but not apply for the DUO Award. It is each student's decision and NUS International Relations Office does not interfere.

Students interested in the DUO Award have always first submitted their application individually without a guaranteed match with a NUS student going to their home university. You will have to follow the same procedure.

12. How and where should I submit my application forms?

The award body for the DUO award requires the application form and all supporting documents to be submitted only by hard copy. Please note that you are responsible for mailing the completed documents on time so that they will be received by 15th March. Scanned copies by email are strictly not accepted. You should mail your application form to:
