The Evolution of the NUS Identity
The origins of the
National University of Singapore (NUS) may be traced to
1905, when Singapore's first centre of higher education -
The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government
Medical School - was founded. |

The name change of the Straits Settlements and Federated
Malay States Government Medical School to King Edward VII
Medical School was formalised with a coat of arms. |

1928
Raffles College was established to complement medical
studies with the teaching of Arts and Science at tertiary
level. |

|

1949
Raffles College merged with King Edward VII College of
Medicine to become University of Malaya. |
| |
|
 |
1955
Nanyang University started classes in Jurong. |
| |
|
 |
1962
The University of Malaya at Singapore was formally established
as the University of Singapore. |
| |
|
 |
1980
The University of Singapore and Nanyang University merged
to form the National University of Singapore. |

2001
The coat of arms remains unchanged while the
identity positions NUS as a global knowledge enterprise. |
