Asian Cities - Liveability Sustainability Diversity and Spaces of Encounter
This project focuses on four Asian cities that can be described as 'ordinary' (Robinson 2006) (Kunming, China; Busan, South Korea; Hyderabad, India; Singapore).
The project will examine the ways in which issues of liveability, sustainability, difference and diversity are lived with, and through, in selected neighbourhoods. The neighbourhoods will be selected on the basis of recent social, cultural, economic, technological and/or infrastructure changes. The research will examine the alignment or contradictions between people actually living the varied processes of urbanisation on the ground, and official city and institutional policies, plans, discourses and practices. In this way the tensions and collaborations between actors involved in urban processes can be examined. Worst and best practices will be identified, analysed and recorded.
We will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods in situ in each city – these include surveys, interviews, focus groups and discourse analysis. Our intellectual approach and research methods will provide holistic understandings of the key workings of urban social, cultural, environmental and technological inter-relationships, processes and transformations.
We aim to contribute to aspects of debate about urban policy and planning as well as critique and expand contemporary urban theory, which is generally very Western centric. |
