Asian Urbanism in the Age of Global Modernity |
19 - 20 September 2011
NUS, Singapore
Program |
The workshop brings together eminent scholars with an active interest in Asian urbanism in order to explore major transformations of Asian cities from a global perspective. We aim to juxtapose a general understanding of large-scale global changes in the last twenty or thirty years, captured by the idea of global modernity, with specific challenges faced by East Asian metropolises--specifically Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The idea of global modernity refers to some of the central aspects of our contemporary world, that is organized in an increasingly post-national, post-western, and polycentric way and where there is rapid diffusion of innovations, institutionalizations, and their effects. These aspects of globalization have major, if often poorly understood, implications for global cities and urban planning. A proliferation of non-state organizations restructures urban governance and its relations to the nation-state on the one hand, and the network of global cities, on the other. The shift away from the West elevates major non-Western, primarily Asian, metropolises into new role models and centers of urban innovation and modernity. And the increase in global contemporaneity intensifies mutual observation of urban planning and policies among global cities, thus accelerating the spread of innovations.
How are regional urban scholars and urban planners meeting the challenges posed by such rapid social transformation on an unprecedented scale? How does this affect the context of their work, their relation to other scholars, urban experts, and policy-makers? What are the ways in which they observe and understand various Asian metropolises within this rapidly evolving global urbanism? We hope that the workshop will contribute to the understanding of these large issues and prepare the ground for more intense networking and coordination of research on Asian cities and their role in global modernity. |
