Increasing income inequality in China is a topic of discussion for quite a while since the economic reforms of late 1970s. Indeed, the literature is flooded by several misconceptions and misinterpretations of the methodology and consequently the results. Exploring the available data we demonstrate some of the problems related to the computation of income inequality in China. We will also explore the changing pattern and trend in income inequality in China over the last two decades, decomposing inequality into subgroups of population and components of income. This will indicate a few policy prescriptions and their effects.
