Thomas Walczyk joined the Food Science and Technology Programme at NUS in 2007 as an Associate Professor, jointly appointed by the Department of Chemistry (Faculty of Science) and the Department of Biochemistry (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine).
He has carried out extensive field and model studies on population, water and energy resources, and environmental problems in Costa Rica, Pakistan, India, China, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and to a lesser extent, in 25 other countries.

He holds a Diploma in General Chemistry and a PhD in Isotope Sciences from the University of Regensburg in Germany. After completion of his studies he joined the Laboratory of Human Nutrition at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in 1994 which he left in 2007 as a senior scientist and lecturer to become a faculty member at NUS.

His major expertise and research interest lies in the area of human mineral and trace element nutrition. He is head of NutriTrace@NUS, a dedicated research facility for the exploration of element metabolism in humans using stable isotope techniques, the most advanced facilities of its kind in Asia.

In recent years he has been actively involved in strengthening the role of stable isotope techniques in basic and applied research under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) as well as other national and international research organizations.

GAI areas of interest:
  • Impact of urbanization and rapid rural-urban migration on education, health and social structures
  • Innovative technological solutions to ensure adequate infrastructure to support safe drinking water, sanitation, energy, food security and housing
