Jeff Obbard is an Associate Professor in the Division of Environmental Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, NUS. He currently holds a joint appointment with the Science & Engineering Research Council (SERC), of the Agency for Science Technology & Research (A*STAR) in Singapore as Principal Scientist and Manager of its Bioenergy Program.

Jeff graduated from the Department of Environmental Science at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom (BSc. Hons I), which was then followed by a Ph.D sponsored by the UK’s national Water Research Centre. His research work at NUS is on the development of sustainable fuel feedstocks from marine microalgae at the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI), where he holds a position as Project Director. Prior to his appointment at NUS he worked for Enviros (a British consultancy firm) on the environmental impact assessment of major infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and the wider region of Asia.

In 2005, he was a team recipient of the United Nations Mondialogo Engineering Award (with special laureate recognition) for his work on sustainable development in South East Asia. He received an Outstanding Mentor Award from the Singapore Ministry of Education in 2005, and was also the recipient of the NUS University Teaching Excellence Award in 2007 & 2008. He is currently conducting in-country training sessions on climate change science and renewable energy for government representatives of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.
