Professor Heng Chye Kiang studied architecture at the École Spéciale d’Architecture and urban design at the École Nationale des Travaux Publics de L’État, France. He obtained his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. His research covers the areas of urban design, heritage and history of Chinese cities. He publishes widely in these areas and was awarded the NUS Outstanding Researcher Award in 1997.
His book Cities of Aristocrats and Bureaucrats (University of Hawaii, 1999) is currently being used as text in several courses in leading US and UK universities. His research on the digital reconstruction of Tang period Chang’an has being published as a book and interactive software by China’s Architecture and Building Press (2006). The software is currently licensed to the Xi’an Museum for display and to the Discovery, NHK and Wowow (Japan) channels for use in their documentaries.
He also consults internationally on urban design and is the conceptual designer of several international urban design competition winning entries in China. Prof Heng is presently Dean of the School of Design and Environment at the National University of Singapore and co-leader of the Asian Cities Cluster at the Asian Research Institute. He is also Board member of Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Centre for Liveable Cities. |
