The Global Asia Institute (GAI) held its first event – a series of three Minisymposia.

The Minisymposia were lively affairs, attracting the participation of about 90 academics from a wide cross-section of NUS. Speakers, both NUS faculty as well as invited academics from Harvard and Columbia University, spoke on various issues relating to three overarching areas: Consequences of Economic Stress; The Urban Environment of 21st Century Asia – Characteristics and Consequences; and Allocation of Resources (Water, Energy and Food).

In his remarks, President Tan Chorh Chuan shared his vision for GAI – that it will help to differentiate NUS by being both "global" and "Asian", thus connecting to NUS' vision to be a leading global university centred in Asia. He sees the institute drawing on and integrating the breadth of knowledge across disciplines, to inquire into broader questions that impact Asian economies and communities.

Following the Minisymposia, a reprise meeting was held to plan the next steps forward, and the University's Senate approved the formation of GAI as a University-level Research Institute on 11 September 2009.
