Professional Diploma in Behaviour Psychology (PDBP)

Synopsis

The Professional Diploma in Behaviour Psychology is a highly-practical and affordable programme that teaches people-skills through behaviour observation, analysis and most importantly, “behaviour intervention”. The content is dedicated to the education of parents, educators, nurses, managers and professionals engaged in all organizations , as well as safety professionals. It is especially useful for the purpose of understanding, predicting and influencing behaviour. Understanding and mastery of such key competencies will therefore help to make you a better people-manager.

Modules include classroom and agency-based experiential learning on how to make behaviour observation, analysis and intervention.
It prepares participants to provide quality, science-based behaviour management services to one and all. Through this learning process, you will learn to operate effectively as service delivery administrators and managers. This programme will benefit you if you need to supervise, and deal with people at work.

Who Should Attend?
This program is suitable for any individual who is keen on managing a group of people. This program will prepare graduates to work in schools, hospitals, welfare institutions, health maintenance organizations, and a wide variety of settings such as forensic settings, research facilities, family service centres and health, safety and environment departments of organizations. This program is suitable for any individual who is keen on managing a group of people.

Attendance and Supervised Learning
The PDAP will be delivered wholly in Singapore as part of the NUS Extension Programme.

Description of Modules in the Professional Diploma in Applied Psychology
Students on the PDBP will take 4 courses from Section A, 6 courses from Section B and 1 course from Section C conducted at the NUS Extension over a 6-month period. Students also have the option to take courses from the list of Behaviour Based Safety courses from Section D to replace course requirements from Section B on a one-for-one basis. Through this programme, participants will have completed a total of 150 hours of instruction (inclusive of two 3-hr examinations) and practical training.

Section A will cover basic principles of applied psychology, practical application of these basic principles, and ethical issues related to the delivery of applied psychology services. Students are expected to take a 3-hour examination for this section.

For Section B , students will be given the necessary coursework in theoretical foundations, and applying basic research and applications for applied psychology. The participant will actually learn to effectively teach new behaviour and to reduce unwanted behaviour in a variety of settings including homes, welfare institutions, care facilities, hospitals, factories and business organizations. Students are expected to take a 3 hour examination for Section B.

Students must take one course from Section C .
Upon completion of coursework from Section A & B, students are expected to receive verification of training. A supervised practicum is required. Students will be thoroughly briefed by our teams of mentors and supervisors. Practical training will be based on a supervised attachment to work with children or adults in home, educational or business settings. The participant will actually learn to effectively teach new behaviour and to reduce unwanted behaviour. Our mentored and supervised experience of 35 hours (5 full days of 7 hours over 3 weeks) will be coached by one or more of our team of expert applied psychologists. One or more of our team of expert psychologists will supervise programme design and implementation ensuring that behavioral and motivational changes are made, significantly improving the quality of life of clients. The practicum will be conducted at 3 designated agencies which will be assigned to the students by our mentors or supervisors.

Applied Behaviour Psychology in Clinical Settings (PDAP 401)

Section B: Practical Modules in Applied Psychology
(Students must take ALL 6 modules from Section B: (PDAP 501-508).
Applied Psychology for Managing People (PDAP 501)
Applied Psychology for Positive Human Relations (PDAP 503)
Managing Conflicts with Applied Psychology (PDAP 504)
Power Negotiation with Applied Psychology (PDAP 505)
Stress Management with Applied Psychology (PDAP 506)
Applied Psychology for Assessment of Character or Personality (PDAP 508)

Section C: Practicum - Agency Project for Applied Behavioural Interventions
Besides completing the coursework, students must take the advanced practicum work. In such a case, students will have to put in a total of 35 hrs or 1 full-week by choosing at least one area or agency for their practical work. Students must choose 1 out of the 5 modules from Section C: PDAP 711-715 . Student who chooses to do this module will have to make special arrangements with our Course and Placement Agency Facilitators).

Section D: Behaviour Based Safety Courses as Electives
(Can replace Section B courses - 1 for 1)

PDAP 801 Behaviour Based Safety 1 - Foundations (Observation & Intervention for a Safer Workplace) 24 hrs
PDAP 802 Behaviour Based Safety 2 - Implementation (How to implement BBS in your company) 30 hrs
PDAP 803 Behaviour Based Safety 3 - Incident Investigation (Conducting an investigation into root causes) 18 hrs

Award of Professional Diploma in Behaviour Psychology (PDBP)
Courses will be offered at weekly intervals starting in January 2012 and July 2012. Upon successful completion of the coursework and examination, participants will be required to complete a practicum assignment at a designated agency before being awarded a Professional Diploma in Behaviour Psychology by NUS Extension.

Duration
Refer to individual modules. All students must take a total of 10 modules and pass required examinations. They must also submit a project report on their practicum assignment at a preselected agency. The total length of completion of the courses, examinations and practicum assignment should not be longer than 6 months.
