What is the art being produced? What media do artists work in? How does the art market function? Learners will be introduced to appreciate the diversity of art, critically examine paintings, and know the functions of various vehicles of sale: auctions, galleries, studios and art fairs. Learners will also gain confidence in selecting and buying works of art.Course Objectives
- Learners will understand how to identify different kinds of art with respect to medium and origin.
- Learners will appreciate the diversity of art in production, and have a deeper understanding of a work of art.
- Learners will have some knowledge and understanding of the workings of the art market and the market value of art.
- Learners will be have some confidence in knowing how to select & buy a work of art.
Course Outline
8 sessions, once –a-week, 1.5 hrs each, comprising 8 talks, Q&A, discussions & presentations
- Introduction to some art media - 2D; 3D – paintings, drawings, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics, digital, new media etc. What’s available at galleries
- Periods of Art – a quick survey around the world: ethnic art, history of art by artistic landmarks, the modern & post-modern period, a look at Asia
- Art appreciation & critique 1
- Approaches to buying art – art prices & market; auctions or galleries or artists’ studios
- The rise of Asian art
- Art appreciation & critique 2
- Building a personal buying profile.
- How to select art for your personal buying portfolio; what to look for on a piece of art
