Arabic level II

Now that you are able to read and write Arabic and assign diacritics quite proficiently, our primary focus in this course is to build upon and maximize your communicative competence by means of learning the language in contexts as spoken and used by native speakers, augmenting your active vocabulary, learning new structures and grammar rules, and writing short compositions/paragraphs on various topics. This is done through a wide range of topics/themes, such as buying things in a grocery store, talking to an immigration officer in the airport, asking for and giving directions and alike. You will be led through these authentic conversations in a systematic fashion—you will practice them with your classmates and subsequently personalize them or come up with similar conversations using your concurrently acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures. To be able to produce as much of the language as possible, a communicative-cum-discovery learning approach is employed - just as it was done in Arabic 1. Your active participations in class activities, pair work, group work, (presentations), and alike is essential. Basic reading passages will also be introduced and taught communicatively. To put it tersely, by the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Read and write the language a lot more swiftly and assign diacritics a lot more proficiently.
  • Converse in the language on a variety of topics, albeit simply, but with fluency and considerable confidence.
  • Know more about the phonological and morphological features of the language and use them in your classroom interactions.
  • Analyze structures for better understanding and easier interaction in the language and assign cases correctly—though cases are not over emphasised at this point.
  • Write short compositions on a variety of topics.
  • Know more about the Arab World and its culture.
