NUS partners FIND to discover novel biomarkers for Tuberculosis detection

Singapore, 15 December 2011– A research team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Singapore Lipidomics Incubator (SLING) is collaborating with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) to identify novel target molecules to be employed as biomarkers for the detection of active tuberculosis (TB). The aim is to translate these targets into a diagnostic test that is affordable, easy to use and produces rapid results, and that can be used by community health workers in poor countries.

New NUS spin-off company to develop more accurate kidney disease diagnostic kit

17 October, Singapore – A new spin-off company from the National University of Singapore (NUS), called Nephron Dx, has recently been set up to develop a more accurate diagnostic kit for the earlier detection of diabetic chronic kidney disease. Nephron Dx aims to enter the multi-billion dollar kidney disease diagnostic market by 2013.

Launch of BioLynx provides a boost for the international malaria research community

12 October 2011, Singapore – A new biotech company has been spun off from the National University of Singapore (NUS), to provide research tools, targeting the international malaria research community. BioLynx Technologies Pte Ltd (BioLynx) has been founded by two NUS faculty members: Dr Martin Lear from the NUS Department of Chemistry and Dr Kevin Tan from the NUS Department of Microbiology. The company will focus on further developing and commercialising its LynxTagTM technology platform to other drugs and diseases. BioLynx is launching its presence at TechVenture 2011, Asia’s premier event for the finance community to engage with the latest high tech innovations.

World’s first bi-axial bioreactor set to revolutionise pre-clinical trials in the field of regenerative medicine

10 October 2011, Singapore – A research collaboration between the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) has resulted in the development of the world’s first bi-axial bioreactor. This provides a controlled environment, with the optimal combination of nutrients and gases for growing cells. The bi-axial bioreactor is ideal for slowgrowing cells, such as bone cells, stem cells and primary cells. A start-up company, QuinXell Technologies, has exclusively licensed this technology from NUS and SP, and is marketing it under the name TisXell. QuinXell Technologies is currently focusing on the research market, targeting hospitals, research institutes and pharmaceutical/ biotech companies that are doing research in areas such as regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, translational medicine and tissue/ organ transplant.

New location-based mobile marketing platform launched in Singapore

22 August 2011, Singapore – Good news for all shoppers! Great promotions are now available from retail outlets all year round, extending beyond the Great Singapore Sale. A new technology start-up company, Gozo Labs, has launched a location-based mobile marketing solution. Called around! (www.around.com.sg), this is a free-to-download iPhone application that offers shopping discounts in Singapore. Set up two NUS Overseas College alumni, Gozo Labs is being incubated by NUS Enterprise.

Local company steals the show at Asia’s largest computer exhibition, by winning multiple design and innovation awards

Singapore, 30th May –Singapore-based company Gajah International (“Gajah”) has been awarded five Computex Taipei design & innovation awards, as well as a Computex Best Design award, at this year’s Computex Taipei. The winning products are all from Gajah’s 2011 product line and are its eBook Readers (BK7004, BK7007), Video Memos (ViMo 1501, ViMo 1801), Portable Speakers (GD71) and ViMo 1801 was awarded the Computex Best Design award. Computex Taipei will be held from 31 May – 4 June and is Asia’s largest computer exhibition.

12th Start-Up@Singapore Awards Ceremony - Champions Crowned!

Sunday, 22 May 2011 –This year at the Start-Up@Singapore’s Awards Ceremony, top entrepreneurs were recognized. Starting in September 2010, the Start-Up@Singapore (S@S) business plan competition was an eight month process, culminating in a rigorous judging process, held yesterday. AquaInnova, a team comprising of 4 enterprising students from Thailand, emerged the champions of the Open category, beating some 1,000 participants from over 17 countries. AquaInnova received the grand prize of $20,000 in cash, and also a green lane to the $50,000 SPRING YES! Startup Fund. In addition, they also gain direct entry to the Intel Berkeley Tech Challenge and direct entry to Global Tic.

Inaugural I&E Award recognises two outstanding entrepreneurs for their spirit of innovation and enterprise

19 April 2011, Singapore – NUS Enterprise and the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS) jointly announced the two inaugural recipients of the Innovation & Enterprise (I&E) award, under the Outstanding NUS Innovator Award category. They are Mr Tan Min Liang, CEO and Chief Gamer of Razer, a company that makes computer gaming accessories and Dr Steven Zhou from the NUS Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The award recipients received a $10,000 cash prize and trophy today from Prof Tan Chorh Chuan, at The Enterprise Connection. This networking dinner was attended by some 450 entrepreneurs, innovators and investors.

MoVend expands to BlackBerry and Windows platforms

5 April 2011, Singapore - Stream Media Private Limited, a Singapore-based company, announced today that its flagship product, MoVend (www.movend.com) has expanded to other platforms. MoVend is an in-app commerce platform that was previously only available on the Android platform. With this expansion, developers can now integrate MoVend seamlessly onto BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 platforms. This is significant as it is the first time that a payment aggregator within the worldwide mobile industry has incorporated BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 operating systems.

16 March 2011, Singapore – The Grameen Creative Lab (GCL) and NUS Entrepreneurship Centre have today formed a partnership, known as GCL@NUS. This new initiative aims to promote and incubate innovation-based social businesses in Singapore that have the potential to generate scalable and sustainable social impact. GCL@NUS will leverage upon GCL’s global resources and networks, as well as NUS’ innovations and strong incubation ecosystem. This is the first time that The Grameen Creative Lab has partnered with a Singapore-based organisation.

Stream Media raises Series A funding

Called Clearbridge VitalSigns, this medical device start-up company will develop and commercialise an NUS invention, which is a novel, ultra-low powered electrocardiogram (ECG) chip.
