Office of the Deputy President (Research & Technology)

High-impact research that advances the boundaries of knowledge and contributes to the betterment of society

NUS-Cambridge (UK) Dual University Assistant Professorship

In order to strengthen research links, especially in areas involving cross-disciplinary research, applications are invited for dual-university appointments as Assistant Professor (AP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Assistant Director of Research at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).  The appointee will be hosted by a department from a participating faculty or institute at NUS in conjunction with a partner department from a participating school at Cambridge: School of Biological Sciences, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Physical Sciences  and School of Technology.

Successful candidates may be considered for a tenure-track academic appointment at NUS.  The appointee is expected to build up his/her research at NUS in collaboration with Cambridge academic staff.   In the first three-year appointment, the appointee may spend up to half the time at Cambridge engaging in research and other academic activities.

Current appointees on this scheme are listed here

Principles of the Scheme

1.     The “home” University of such APs is NUS, which will provide laboratory facilities, a start-up package, and eventual tenure/promotion subject to excellent performance.
2.     The AP would normally work within an existing laboratory at Cambridge yet have a significant degree of independence in research.
3.     The AP in his/her first three years could spend up to half of his/her time at Cambridge, the time distribution being determined by the requirements of the research.  A laboratory at NUS must be developed simultaneously.
4.     The AP will have privileges of a lecturer at Cambridge (except the right to be considered for a tenured appointment), including the ability to (co)-supervise students and participate in teaching.  However, teaching loads in years 1 and 2 will be lighter than that of lecturers appointed directly by Cambridge or at NUS. Stipends to support top-level graduate students working at both NUS and Cambridge may be provided.

Selection process

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by academics from both Cambridge and NUS.  They would be required to present a seminar and participate in research discussions.

Terms and conditions

Successful candidates would be offered attractive and competitive remuneration packages.  More information about working in NUS could be found at http://www.nus.edu.sg/careers/index.html.
