Singapore International Energy Week 2012 - Asia Future Energy Forum and Exhibition

NUS will be hosting a booth at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2012, Asia Future Energy Forum & Exhbition (AFEF) through the combined efforts of NUS Energy Office, NUS Enterprise and the Office of Environmental Sustainability. The booth will feature exhibits and posters showing the range of NUS R&D, education and outreach, and enterprise "From Lab to Market".

There will also be a NUS Mini-Conference which will be held on 24 October 2012 (Wednesday) from 2.30pm to 4pm. The session will be held at the Marina Bay Sands Conference Hall C and it will feature a signing ceremony for tech transfer among NUS and Medad Pte Ltd, Republic Polytechnic and ST Kinetics, a panel discussion on the breadth of NUS activities "From Lab to Market" and a talk by Keppel Professor Andrew Palmer on "Nuclear Power in Singapore?"

Admission to the exhibition is free. You can either register online or you can also register on site.

National Energy Efficiency Conference 2012
Energy Efficiency as a Business Opportunity

The National Energy Efficiency Conference (NEEC) is part of the learning network of the Energy Efficiency National Partnership (EENP) programme. Its main objective is to provide through leadership in energy efficiency, bringing together energy efficiency experts and industry energy professionals to share best practices and success case studies.

This year, the second NEEC will take place from 18 to 20 September 2012 with the theme "Energy Efficiency asa Business Opportunity"!

Prof Michael Quah, Director, NUS Energy Office, will be the moderator for the morning plenary session 3 on 20 September 2012 on "Developing Singapore's Energy Efficiency Capabilities Part 2".





How much can you prepare for a disaster? Lessons from Fukushima

The earthquake and tsunami which hit the eastern part of Japan in March 2011 offers many lessons for cities coping with natural or man-made disasters. One important lesson is the critical role of disaster information communication system to trigger off the alert, and then to accurately transmit information in a timely manner to various parties such as rescue workers, government officials and citizens to facilitate cooperation in the rescue and recovery work. This talk draws lessons from the Fukushima incident and highlights and evaluates the strengths and limitations of info communication or smart technologies in helping cities prepare and manage disasters.

BESS Workshop on Bioresources to Fuels and Chemicals 2012

This workshop is organised by the BioEnergy Society of Singapore (BESS) and chaired by Assoc Prof Li Zhi from Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, NUS. The aim of the workshop is to provide updates on the latest development in R&D of bioresources to fuels and chemicals as supplements to the current fossil resources




14th Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering (APCChE) Congress 2012

 21 - 24 February 2012

The APCChE 2012 was held at the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Center. The aim of the congress was to enhance communication among researchers and practitioners from Asian countries working in the area of Chemical Engineering.

The APCChE 2012 was founded in 1975 through the efforts of Professor T.Misushima of Kyoto University, Japan. It was formed to provide a focus for various non-profit societies, associations and institutions working in the field of Chemical Engineering in the Asia Pacific region. APCChE comprises of member societies in 13 countries and regions, namely China, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK) are corresponding members.

The major topics for the APCChE 2012 included Macromolecular Science and Engineering; Biomaterials and Biotechnology; Nano-materials and Nanotechnologies; New Separation Technology and Clean Energy Systems; Thermodynamics and Transport Phenomena; Catalysis and Reaction Engineering; Chemical Engineering Education; Process Systems Engineering and Synthetic Biology; Green Process and the Environment; Industry and Chem-E-Car Competition.

Prof Lee Jim Yang, Head, ChBE, was the plenary speaker for this congress. NUS was well represented at this event with the following speakers from ChBE: Prof Neal Chung Tai-Shung, Prof G.P. A Triple Bill Special on Green Development

This was a panel session on the "Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development" with Prof Michael Quah from the Energy Office, National University of Singapore, Mr Tan Hang Chong from the Nature Society of Singapore and Mr Jeevaneswaran Ramoo, Chairman of the World Leadership Conference 2011. This event was organized by Environmental Challenge Organisation (Singapore).


  Alternative Aviation Fuel in Asia & ASEAN Algae Biofuel Initiative Conference

15 - 16 February 2012

The Alternative Aviation Fuel in Asia Conference and the ASEAN Algae Biofuels Initiative Conference introduced the development and potential use of alternative fuels in commerical aviation to the Asian community and brought together professionals interested in the development of algae-based bioenergy from the region. The Guest of Honour was BG Mark Wise, Vice Chief of Naval Research, Office of Naval Research, USA, and Ms Julie Oettinger, Assistant Administrator for Policy, International Affairs and Environment of the Federal Aviation Adminstration, USA delivered the keynote address. NUS speakers at this conference included Associate Prof Jeff Obbard (on sabbatical from Civil and Environmental Engineering and Vice-President (Science & Technology), Cellana, LLC); Assistant Prof Lee Dong Yup (Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering); Associate Prof Lee Yuan Kun (Co-Director, Singapore-Peking University Research Centre); Associate Prof Markus Wenk (Biochemistry & Biological Sciences); Associate Prof Sanjay Swarup (Deputy Director, NUS Environmental Research Institute); Asst Prof Lin Qingsong (Biological Sciences); Associate Prof Li Zhi (Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering); Assistant Prof Yew Wen Shan (Biochemistry); Dr Ichiro Nishii (Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory); Assistant Prof Lu Gan (Biological Sciences); Associate Prof Tong Yen Wah (Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering). The Conference Chair was Prof Paul Matsudaira (Biological Sciences), and Associate Prof Chew Fook Tim (Biological Sciences) served as moderator for the whole conference, which was held at Biopolis.
