  Can world's water crisis be solved?

This was an article contributed by Professor Asit K Biswas, a Distinguished Visiting Professor from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS, and Julian Kirchherr, a graduate student on public policy and manangement at the London School of Economics and NUS. They discussed about the global water crisis and opined that a global water awareness campaign may help to prepare the ground for overcoming political inertia and implementing smart water policies and water-saving technologies.

  Pakistan's ongoing energy woes

The former High Commissioner of Pakistan to Singapore (2004 - 2008) and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies opined that the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline can increase Pakistan's energy security.

  Water ecosystems research gets industry boost

NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc have announced a partnership to study how metabolism in plants and bacteria affects water quality and the ecosystem in and around Singapore. The joint venture will encourage the exchange of ideas and expertise to enhance equipment knowledge and software performance, such that new sample preparation methodologies, innovative applications and publications for knowledge sharing can be developed.

The search for cleaner energy is seeing rising interest in "transparent" conductors (TCs), a key component of solar cells and displays for mobile devices. A breakthrough fabrication approach by a group of engineers at NUS, a first for TCs used in solar cells, could pave the way towards achieving cheaper and more energy-efficient electronics.

  NUS environmental projects at energy forum

NUS showcased its latest research of different environmentally sustainable projects on campus at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2012. As part of the inaugural Asia Future Energy Forum & Exhibition held in conjunction with SIEW, the University hosted a mini conference for participants on 24 October 2012. The meeting was organised by the NUS Energy Office, NUS Enterprise and the Office of Environmental Sustainability.

 
  NUS desalination tech draws interest

It was reported that desalination technology developed by NUS has drawn interest from large desalination plant operators in the Middle East and China. NUS signed an agreement with local tech start-up Medad Technologies yesterday to further develop and commercialise the technology. The team at NUS is led by Professor Ng Kim Choon from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NUS Faculty of Engineering.

It was reported that Dr Ho Ghim Wei from the NUS Engineering Science Programme and NUS Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and PhD student Mr Kevin Moe have developed a novel water-based method of fabricating "transparent conductors" - a world's first, paving the way for much cheaper and energy efficient electronics.
