There are a few things that you can do to protect from computer viruses. The key to protecting your computer is in understanding that no solution is perfect and that you should always trust your common sense before anything else. Then, there are some technical things that can be done:

  • Be sensible when opening attachments or following email instructions from apparently reputable sites.
  • Never open attachments from e-mails or received files from any instant messaging program unless you are sure they are intended for you.
  • Always scan diskettes, CD's and any other removable media before using them.
  • Always scan files downloaded from the Internet before using them.
  • Do not install any unapproved software on your computer.
  • Regularly delete Temporary Internet Files (also known as 'cache') and cookies from your browser.
  • Ensure that your virus pattern files are updated.
  • Scan your computer on a regular basis.
  • Keep your operating system up to date. Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh have simple ways to search for critical updates.

And last, keep in mind that there's always a change that a virus will hit you. Keep your data backed up at all times. Backup your work files, pictures and photographs, music and every other piece of data you'll need in case you need to setup your computer from scratch.
