Silent Threats to IT Security

Connect, Live and Learn with Nexus
Jeffery Tay (Centre for Instructional Technology)

A learning management system (LMS), such as IVLE, has served educators and students well.  However, being a walled garden, the LMS is not very well suited to take advantage of the latest internet developments, particularly Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, social bookmarking and the like.

CIT's new service Nexus serves to plug the gap between private and public accessible learning systems. It encompasses personal services beyond just a tool for learning.  It Connects, Live, and Learn.

Nexus allows you to access IVLE, NUS Libraries services, Network TV and webcast lectures directly from a single presentation dashboard.  You can also view external services like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and games from the same tabbed interface.  For your convenience, we have made available some predefined services in Nexus.

You are also free to add other widgets that are available in Nexus.  For example, an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) widget allows you to pull in any RSS-enabled content such as blogs and news to your Nexus interface.  A ticker at the bottom of the screen broadcasts the latest news and alerts of NUS directly to your personalised space.

What is being planned in the near future is that staff and students can also develop widgets to be used in Nexus - making Nexus a service developed truly by users for users.

For more information about Nexus, contact Mr or read the Nexus blog.
