It's the time of the year when new students join us - and it's time to get a notebook to start off the term.

Most of the notebooks available from our exciting lineup this year come with the new Intel "Montevina" chipset.  Literally "Hot" off the press, these machines were introduced recently into the market with the latest performance and compatibility improvements.

Newly introduced this year is the UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) with <1kg in weight.  These cool white and blue "bento" boxes run on Windows XP and Linux OS respectively and are priced below $800.  Having it won't break your back or wallet while it does spice up your cool geek gadget factor.

Many of us are fond of instant messaging (IM) or using chat programs from Microsoft and Yahoo.  Do you know that we also have our corporate instant messaging client as well?

Now, for the “Road Warriors”, NUS IM client is available for Windows Mobile and Blackberry users, allowing you to chat while on the move!  Better still, your MS Outlook calendar status is reflected on your IM Client without the need to manually set it to "Meeting" or "Busy".

With the CPU clock-speed approaching its limit, and multi-core technologies dominating the CPU markets, it is thus inevitable that HPC and research computing users shift from relying on native clock-speed to multi-core parallel computing to speed-up their computational processing.

A new 768-core cluster, to be launched in early August will also feature large memory nodes of up to 128GB and the fast InfiniBand internal network

Many of us used to rely on StreetDirectory.com to find our way around Singapore.  Unfortunately, the site has in effect shut down since April 2008 after its long legal battle with Singapore Land Authority (SLA) on copyright issues.

Many Google Maps-based mashup services have since been sprung out, with the likes of eRoutePlanner, Street Sine, SkyPigeon and GoThere.  Some of them even look alike, while trying to differentiate themselves by offering route planning etc.
