Claire Wong
Part-time Tutor
Born in Malaysia, Claire Wong lives and works in Singapore. Claire graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (Theatre Arts) from Columbia University, New York. She is a co-founder and Joint Artistic Director of Checkpoint Theatre, Singapore.
As an actress, Claire was most recently seen on stage in Checkpoint Theatre's Cogito, written and directed by Huzir Sulaiman, and a commission of the Singapore Arts Festival 2007. Last year, Claire acted in the Singapore feature film, The Blue Mansion (currently in post-production).
She has performed to critical and popular acclaim locally, in major international arts festivals and in cities such as Edinburgh (UK); Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne (Germany); Copenhagen (Denmark); New York (USA); Paris (France); Adelaide (Australia); Tokyo, Yokohama and Fukuoka (Japan); and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
Her performance in Huzir Sulaiman's acclaimed play Atomic Jaya garnered her nominations for Best Actress and Best Ensemble Performance in both the Singapore Life! Theatre Awards and the Malaysian Cameronian Arts Awards respectively. She was also nominated for the Best Actress award for Occupation.
Her stage credits include: Cogito, Atomic Jaya, Opiume (Checkpoint Theatre); Atomic Jaya (Five Arts Centre); Occupation (Straits Theatre Company); The Woman In A Tree On the Hill (Wild Rice); Lear, Desdemona, Madame Mao's Memories, Beauty World, Three Children, Mad Forest (Theatreworks).
As a director, she was nominated for Best Director in the Singapore's Life! Theatre Awards for the landmark production of the trilogy of plays by Eleanor Wong, Invitation To Treat (Mergers & Accusation, Wills & Secession, Jointly & Severably). She co-directed Occupation, a commission of the Singapore Arts Festival 2002. Her other theatre directing credits include Up North Down South (2002) and Election Day (2004). For the 2006 International Festival of Women in Contemporary Theatre, she co-created and performed in the piece Recalling Mother.
Her screen directing began in 2005, when she wrote and directed a television film, Project Peter, for Singapore's Arts Central channel. She wrote and directed a short film in Malaysia, Instant Noodles and Hot Chocolate, and was the script consultant and performer in That Historical Feeling, a Malaysian short film, which won a Bronze award at the Malaysian Video Awards.
She recently co-wrote the feature film The Unforgettable Rose Chan and is currently working on the script of a historical film of the Rani of Jhansi Regiment of the Indian National Army.
An Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore, she is Head of Corporate Communications of Rodyk & Davidson LLP, Singapore's oldest law firm.
