Formed in 1981 by Mr Alex Abisheganaden, the NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) is a 50-member strong ensemble comprising undergraduates and alumni. As the region's first Niibori guitar ensemble and the pioneer group in Singapore to use Niibori guitars, GENUS has set a benchmark for local guitar ensembles.

Using the finger style method and a special set of guitars with varying pitch compasses, GENUS reveals its uniqueness through its exploration of varying shades and tonalities. The ensemble boasts a wide repertoire ranging from classical works to jazz, blues and popular contemporary pieces.

The ensemble also seeks to challenge itself through competing in local and international competitions. GENUS won first prize in the ensemble section in the Singapore Guitar Festival and was placed fourth in the 2nd International Festival and Competition for Guitar Orchestra in Rheine, Germany. In July 2006, GENUS toured in Japan, homeland of Niibori-styled guitar orchestra, and held a successful joint concert with the award-winning Tsu Guitar ensemble at a Niibori festival in the presence of Dr Hiroki Niibori.

Apart from performing on campus platforms such as the NUS Arts Festival and ExxonMobil Campus Concerts, GENUS has also performed for

  • FM 92.4's 10th Anniversary Celebration
  • Asean University Games
  • National University of Singapore Welcome Convention
  • Charity Gala Ball
  • Singapore Arts Festival
  • Beautiful Sunday at Esplanade
