Tutor's Bio

Fan Dong Kai

Artistic Director & Resident Choreographer

A graduate of the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy, Fan Dong Kai has been the Resident Choreographer of NUS Dance Synergy since 1997. He was selected to study choreography under the tutelage of Mr Ben Stevenson, Artistic Director of the Houston Ballet in the United States in 1988 and subsequently became their Guest Choreographer in 1994. He joined the People's Association Dance Company as a Senior Choreographer in 1994 and is currently the Artistic Producer of the PA TALENTS.

As Artistic Director for PA TALENTS, Dong Kai has choreographed for major events like the Chingay Parade since 1993 and the National Day Parade since 1998. His other works include the PA 40th Anniversary Celebrations Concert (2000), the launch of the new PA logo (2002) and the Citizen Consultative Committee 40th Anniversary celebrations (2005).

Dong Kai has won many international awards and competitions both as a choreographer and dancer. His choreography has been staged in ballet competitions in USA (1990) and Switzerland (1991), as well as global festivals in Japan (1995), Taiwan (1996, 1997), Tokyo and Paris (1997), USA (1997) and South Korea (2000). As a dancer, he has also won four awards in the 6th China International Dance Competition in 2004.

With great involvement in the Singapore art scene, Dong Kai increasingly produces artistic and creative works that are in tandem with the harmonious cultural identity that is uniquely Singaporean.
