NUS Lion Dance

  • NUS Lion Dance

The NUS Lion Dance was founded in 1985 and officially joined the NUS Centre For the Arts (CFA) in 2004. The group was formed by NUS undergraduates and alumni who shared a mutual love and passion for Chinese lion dancing. Within a year, the troupe has grown to become one of Singapore's more known dance troupes, making numerous special appearances not only during the Lunar New Year festive season but throughout the year on and off campus.

The group aims to promote Lion Dance as a cultural form to NUS community and raise awareness  from  within campus towards nationwide. It is also a leading example for all Lion Dance institutional troupes in Singapore.

It hopes to represent NUS and Singapore at national and international Lion Dance competitions in the coming years. With more competition experiences, the group aims to organize a National Lion Dance Competition for all educational institutions to encourage more schools to participate in this healthy art.



Major performances include:

  • Chinese New Year Celebrations (Feb 2005)
  • NTU Lion Dance competition (Mar 2005)
  • Centennial Celebrations: Oriental Suite (Aug 2005)
  • 11th Annual National Lion Dance competition preliminary rounds (Aug 2005)
  • 11th Ngee Ann City National Lion Dance competition finals (Sept 2005) (traditional category)
  • Performance at St Patrick' Day Parade (Mar 2007)
  • Performance at Graduate Business Conference (Apr 2007)

The group is the first and only Singapore tertiary institution to win awards in the Ngee Ann City National Lion

Dance Championships since the competition started in 1993.

Their achievements include:

  • Champion - NTU Inter-Varsity Competition 2004
  • 3rd Runner-up - 10th Ngee Ann City National Lion Dance Championships 2004 (West Zone)
  • 1st Runner-up - 11th Ngee Ann City National Lion Dance Championships 2005(West Zone)
  • 1st Runner-up - 11th Ngee Ann City National Lion Dance Championships 2005
