NUS Dance Ensemble
About
NUS Dance Ensemble has earned wide recognition for its dedication in showcasing new talents and original works. As a platform for young dancers and choreographers, the Ensemble explores various facets of dance, incorporating dance movements such as contemporary, jazz and ballet in their ever-changing, uncompromising and unconventional repertoire. Ethnic elements are also expressed through a variety of modern interpretations.
Under the direction of its Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Zaini Mohammed Tahir, and the management of NUS Centre For the Arts, the NUS Dance Ensemble staged its first dance concert Imageries in Kallang Theatre in 1992.
Since then, it has been active at external and campus events, which include the ExxonMobil Campus Concerts Opening show, the Official Opening of the University Cultural Centre and the Dance Reflections concerts. The Ensemble also stages Evocation and its highly successful The Next Wave concerts annually.
Staking its reputation on the integrity of its dancers and choreographers, the NUS Dance Ensemble has left an imprint on the memories of members of the audience island wide. Aspiring to be an ambassador of dance in the local arts scene, the NUS Dance Ensemble regularly performs at various schools including Temasek Junior College, Saint Andrew's Junior College, Victoria Junior College and Methodist Girls' School.
Overseas Expeditions
Its overseas trips include performances in Malaysia, Thailand, the ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum held at Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2005 and Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2007. The Ensemble also represented Singapore at the China-ASEAN Youth Arts Festival held in Guizhou, China in July 2008. Most recently, it garnered yet more international acclaim at the New Prague Dance Festival held in Prague in July 2009. Having bagged the awards of Best Choreography and Special Personal Award of the Director amongst some 400 over reputable contestants worldwide, the NUS Dance Ensemble aspires to achieve bigger dreams and soar to greater heights.
