Important notice for all candidates

1.

Special examination dates for MOE’s Direct School Admission (DSA) applicants

Applicants for MOE’s Direct School Admission (DSA) to secondary schools and junior colleges can now register for the Chinese Instrumental Examination 2013. The examination will be held on 6 June 2013. Registration forms can be requested via email (yuhui@nus.edu.sg / cfalxya@nus.edu.sg). Closing date for registration is 10 May 2013.

Amendments to Gaoyin Sheng Grade 7 Piece 'Shuang Jin Wu'
The piece 'Shuang Jin Wu' (Gaoyin Sheng Grade 7) should be in the key of D Major (F sharp, C sharp). Please click here to download the ammended score.

4.

Inclusion of new instruments into the examination syllabus

In addition to the instruments in the examination syllabus (Erhu, Dizi, Guzheng, Pipa, Yangqin, Ruan, Liuqin, Sheng, Zhongyin Sheng, Suona, Zhongyin Suona, Cello, Double Bass and Percussion), 2 new instruments will be included in this year's syllabus, namely the Hulusi and Guan.

Performance of examination pieces

Candidates are allowed to refer to their examination scores, it is not compulsory to memorise the examination pieces.

Introduction

The first CFA Chinese Instrumental Examination was conducted in December 2004. Led by Mr Lum Yan Sing, Assistant Director at CFA, former Assistant Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Chief Examiner of the examination, an international Advisory Panel has been formed in CFA to oversee the development and conduct of the examination.

 

The main objectives are:

1.

To set up an examination system that will be recognized and accepted by academic and fine arts institutions in Singapore and abroad.

2.

To establish a coherent and consistent set of guidelines for facilitating systematic training of various Chinese musical instruments.

3.

To promote appreciation and education of Chinese music in Singapore and the region.

Since then, the examination has been attracting foreign candidates from countries including Malaysia, China, Japan and Indonesia.

  Closing Date for Registration 27 September 2013
  Notification of Examination schedule (by post) 1 November 2013
  Latest Date for Withdrawal (with 20% refund) 8 November 2013
  Period of Examination 26 November  – 7 December 2013
  Collection of Results and Certificates 6 – 17 January 2014
  *Any uncollected results and certificates will be mailed out after 17 January 2014.
