Coin Design
The coin design was based on the winning entry by Mr Wong Chung Hau and Ms Aw-Yeong Yan Yan in a coin design competition organised by NUS for its students, alumni members and staff.
The coin design consists of a human figure, a stylised globe, NUS Centennial logo, the words "National University of Singapore" and the face value.
The central feature depicts the aspirations of NUS in striving towards global excellence. The curvatures of the figure are shaped according to the letters "NUS". The legs represent "N", the head is "U" while the twisting body forms the "S". This single figure is chosen to reflect people-orientation within the NUS community and to depict NUS as One Body. The figure, reaching towards the star symbol in the logo to signify NUS’ quest for global excellence, is unleashed to rise to new challenges. The leaping form depicts a personal drive to engage in life-long learning.
The stylised globe signifies NUS as a global knowledge enterprise that transcends boundaries of space and time. The words on the circumference anchor the central figure, suggesting that NUS serves as a nurturing ground for equipping graduates to thrive in a fast-changing global economy.
The obverse of the coin bears the Singapore Arms with the year-date 2005.
