| Ushering in of NUS Centennial Celebrations
The festive cheer of the year-long NUS Centennial Celebrations kicked off on 25 June 2005 when more than 300 members of the NUS community of students, staff and alumni, benefactors and partners converged at the new University Hall for the ushering in ceremony. Gracing the occasion was Guest-of-Honour Mr Wong Ngit Liong, NUS Council Chairman.
Highlights of the celebratory event included the raising of the new NUS flag, unveiling of the NUS Centennial Sculpture and the inaugural and live rendition of the NUS song, specially penned for the NUS Centenary. In addition, there was a Photo Exhibition which showcases two major achievements by members of the NUS community – the NUS Centennial Everest Expedition team and a 10-marathon conquest of 7 continents in 70 days by NUS alumnus Dr William Tan. |

The NUS flag is a composition of the University's vibrant corporate colours of golden orange and blue, with the NUS logo emblazoned across the centre. The NUS golden orange denotes ascendancy, vibrancy and vitality while the NUS blue represents dignity, timelessness and endurance.
The main design element is the graceful sweep of a dynamic curve which rises upward and forward. The deliberate flowing movement of the arc intends to express the following visual ideas:
- The vibrancy of NUS – as the orange spreads outward and forward
- The sweep of the curve suggests the rise of a powerful wave, paralleling NUS' boldness in rising to new challenges and opportunities
- The breaking away from the straight lines and boxes of most conventional flag designs hints strongly at NUS' breaking new ground as it moves forward as a global knowledge enterprise.

The NUS Centennial Sculpture is a tangible artistic representation of the NUS Centennial logo. Translated from the infinity symbol of the Centennial Logo, the sculpture was designed by third-year Industrial Design student Wong Kok Keong. Made of stainless steel and mounted on granite pedestal, the 2.5 m tall sculpture stands proudly on display at the University Hall. |

The NUS song titled "NUS Forever" was composed by Dr Ho Chee Kong of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. The lyrics, based on relevant NUS themes, were jointly written by Dr Ho and Dr Robbie Goh from the Department of English Language and Literature. The song can be rendered in either a majestic, soothing, inspirational or simply nostalgic manner.
At the Ushering In ceremony, the combined NUS and NUSS choir gave a stirring rendition of "NUS Forever". The performance was conducted by Ms Elaine Chan from the NUSS Choir.
NUS Forever
Through our friendships forged
From our treasure store
Of bright golden days of old;
The minds that spurred us to greater heights
And the hearts that made us bold.
The distant shores before us rise
The world awaits our enterprise
For we¹re sons and daughters all
Set forth from Alma Mater¹s Halls.
In the years to come
We will draw new strength
From past golden days recalled.
And set our faces toward the light
Of the challenges in store.
Our dauntless hearts will we unite
To seek the good with all our might
Bringing honor to the fore
To NUS forever more.
