Distinguished Alumni Service Award
Citation for Dr Chee Phui Hung
Dr Chee Phui Hung stands out among medical, dental, and pharmacy alumni for his spirited eloquence on issues affecting his alma mater and alumni interests.
Dr Chee graduated with an MBBS degree from the University of Malaya in 1950. His involvement in alumni activities began soon after graduation, when he joined the NUS Society as well as the Alumni Association of the King Edward VII College of Medicine. The latter, now known simply as the Alumni Association, comprises alumni hailing from medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.
Dr Chee has served in leadership positions of both alumni bodies with distinction. He was the NUS Society's President in 1959 to 1960 as well as the Chairman of the Alumni Association's Southern Branch in 1962 and 1974. In 1962, he was elected as the Alumni Association's President. Dr Chee's strong leadership is reflected in him being affectionately known as "Ah gong" on both sides of the Causeway.
The current "Medical Centre", the watering hole for Alumni Association members, owes its existence to Dr Chee's efforts. He was unwavering in securing the use of the former Department of Scientific Services building when the previous gathering place was acquired for other purposes. Having succeeded in getting the premises, he took the further step of rallying members to contribute to its refurbishment.
For his untiring dedication to alumni leadership, he was awarded an Alumni Gold Medal by the Alumni Association in 1984. Appreciative members contributed towards the minting of a one-of-a-kind Special Agong Gold Medal, which was presented to him in 1995.
Dr Chee has distinguished himself by his passionate commitment to the University and alumni community that has spanned more than five decades. NUS is privileged to honor Dr Chee Phui Hung with an inaugural NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
