Writing and Communication Hub Policies

The Writing and Communication Hub has been set up to help clients become better writers and speakers. As the Hub serves the entire University community, we have designed the following policies and procedures to make the consultation experience a pleasant one.

Appointments and Cancellation

  • Please sign up for an appointment in advance. We cannot guarantee that students dropping in will see a consultant immediately, especially during peak periods at the end of the semester. Click here for the online appointment booking system.
  • Appointments are for 25 minute sessions, beginning on the hour and half-hour.
  • Clients may book up to two 25-minute sessions per week.
  • Please show up for your appointments. Missing two appointments without canceling them in advance will result in the loss of Writing and Communication Hub privileges for the rest of the semester.
  • If you need to cancel an appointment, please use the online appointment booking system. You must cancel your appointment four hours prior to your scheduled session time.
  • Clients arriving more than ten minutes late for an appointment may find that their appointments have been canceled and the remaining session time given to a drop-in client. Clients who show up more than ten minutes late will have to reschedule their appointments.

Consultation Sessions

  • Please sign-in at the registration desk before the start of every appointment.
  • Please bring with you everything that you may need for the consultant to help you. For example, bring a copy of the assignment description, outlines, drafts, relevant class notes and your own writing paper to the session.
  • Please come to your session with your own goal for what you want to accomplish during the consultation. Think about how the consultant can best help you. For example, do you want help brainstorming additional ideas for a paper, do you want help organizing a list of ideas, or do you want feedback on the introduction to an oral presentation?
  • The Writing and Communication Hub consultants are happy to work with you at any stage of your assignment (gathering ideas, drafting, revising, or editing); however, consultants will not
    • write an assignment for a student;
    • proofread an assignment (although they will help a student improve his or her own editing/proofreading skills);
    • dispute or question a grade a teacher has given on a student’s assignment;
    • continue a consultation beyond 25-minutes via telephone, email or other communication modes.
