CELC Oral Communication Camp 2017

 

Mastering the Art of Professional Communication

In line with the National University of Singapore’s “Able Communicator Initiative” to prepare NUS students to function effectively in the workplace of the 21st century, the Centre for English Language Communication (CELC) is organising an Oral Communication Camp entitled “Mastering the Art of Professional Communication” between 15 – 17 May 2017.  The event, which is open to NUS undergraduates and postgraduates, seeks to highlight communicative philosophies and approaches that leaders have adopted in managing shifting demands in dynamic situations.

Panel Discussion: Expanding Role of Oral Communication in the 21st century

Synopsis: The 21st century workplace is often described as networked, multi-faceted and dynamic.  In this complex and shifting environment, organizations and workers are constantly seeking creative solutions to manage emerging challenges.  Given the demanding reality of the modern workplace, a good grasp of the fundamentals in oral communication gives one an advantage to respond to changing trends.  In this panel discussion, industry leaders from various sectors will expound on common workplace concerns that challenge the modern organisation and its workforce.  In particular, the panellists will focus on the shifting role of communication in the ever evolving workplace.   

 

Guest Lecture 1: The Art of Professional Communication
Ambassador Chan Heng Chee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore

Synopsis: Drawing from a wealth of experience in the fields of politics and diplomacy, Ambassador Chan Heng Chee will share candidly with the audience the complexities and dilemmas that she has encountered in authentic situations. In particular, she will highlight the need to sharpen one’s awareness of self and environment as a way to adapt to the nuanced communication needs of the situation at hand.  

 

Guest Lecture 2: Pitch It Right
Mr Alvin Yapp, Director & Head of Corporate Affairs, BusAds Pte Ltd

Synopsis: In this session, Mr Alvin Yapp will discuss the challenges in making an effective oral presentation.  In particular, the speaker will highlight the changing expectations of audience in today’s digital economy for timely information, creative solutions, engagement and currency in presentation appeal.

Speaker: Ms Elena Chow, Founder, ConnectOne

Synopsis: In this session, Ms Elena Chow will discuss the challenges in making an effective oral presentation.  In particular, the speaker will highlight the changing expectations of audience in today’s digital economy for timely information, creative solutions, engagement and currency in presentation appeal.

Ambassador Chan Heng Chee

Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore

Ambassador Chan Heng Chee is Ambassador-at-Large with the Singapore Foreign Ministry. She chairs the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities in the Singapore University of Technology and Design.  She is Chairman of the National Arts Council, a Member of the Presidential Council for Minority Rights, a Member of the Constitutional Commission 2016 and Deputy Chairman of the Social Science Research Council. Ambassador Chan is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the National University of Singapore and a Member of the Yale-NUS Governing Board.  She serves as Director of the S Rajaratnam Endowment and also as a Member of the Executive Board of the Chinese Cultural Centre.

Previously, she was Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States and Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Mexico. Ambassador Chan received a number of awards including The Public Administration Medal (Gold); The Meritorious Service Medal; The Distinguished Service Order; Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Letters from the University of Newcastle, Australia; the University of Buckingham (United Kingdom); and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Warwick (United Kingdom). When Ambassador Chan left Washington at the end of her appointment, she received the Inaugural Asia Society Outstanding Diplomatic Achievement Award, the Inaugural Foreign Policy Outstanding Diplomatic Achievement Award 2012 and the United States Navy Distinguished Public Service Award.

Ms Elena Chow

Founder, ConnectOne

Ever since her days at Procter & Gamble (P&G) more than a decade ago, Elena has always been aware of her instinctive ability at identifying talents and in grooming leaders. While fulfilling her key role as a Business Development Leader at P&G, she found herself increasingly drawn towards people-enabling initiatives. In this aspect, her many 'side' projects included spearheading campus recruitment drives, leading capability/training for her business unit and in taking on the role of an in-house trainer for several programs on communication and leadership. What Elena identified as the most satisfying episode in her long standing career at P&G was the opportunity to successfully coach an entry-level sales personnel to undertake his current role as a General Manager at one of P&G's channel partners. 

With this achievement, Elena set her sight to transition to the world of talent development and founded ConnectOne together with her long- time friend and class mate. Initially set up as a talent acquisition venture, Elena discovered that her experience in grooming individuals and building teams could add far more value than just simply matching the needs of companies and job seekers. With an ICF (International Coach Federation) certification under her belt, Elena now coaches talented individuals to discover their personal and career mojo! In recent years, Elena has shifted her focus towards preparing and developing a community of young leaders for today's disrupted economy.  In this business climate, risk-taking, entrepreneurship and high-performance are necessary conditions to succeed against all odds. These values, together with the long standing Singapore Inc. values of integrity, unity and love for nation, are in Elena's views, the foundation of the next 50 years of Singapore’s growth.  This is what gives Elena and her team a true sense of purpose in their passion!

 

Mr Lawrence Chan

VP & Head, Regional Acquirer & Merchant Partnership, Asia Pacific, Visa International

Mr Lawrence Chan has over 20 years of financial services industry experience, having worked for global MNCs including American Express International, American International Assurance, Bank of America, PayPal, SingTel and Visa International.  Mr Chan’s expertise and extensive experience includes the development of new business models and payment products, formation of strategic partnerships with banks and payment networks, and engagement with regulators and merchants in the largest commerce markets in the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, India, Japan and Singapore.

As a senior industry leader in Asia, Mr Chan’s passion has always been to drive growth by leveraging on unique business models, leadership and technology that have a tangible impact on improving the lives of People.

Mr Chan holds a Bachelor of Science degree (2nd Class Upper Honors) in Industrial and Business Economics from the University of London’s School of Economics and Political Science.

 


Mr Rod Strother

VP of Digital Transformation, Starhub

Mr Rod Strother leads StarHub’s digital experience efforts in order to deliver a seamless multi-platform brand experience for customers. He is responsible for driving eCommerce, mobile apps, StarHub’s brand website and the company’s social media efforts. Originally hailing from the UK where he spent a number of years heading the direct marketing and advertising side of British Gas in Scotland, he then traversed across to the agency side where he worked with clients such as Bank of Scotland, Marks and Spencer Financial Services, General Accident Direct and The National Trust for Scotland.

Mr Strother has more than 30 years of experience in the fields of marketing, digital and social media for both brand and marketing agencies across UK, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore. Before joining StarHub in November 2015, Mr Strother set up Lenovo’s Digital and Social Centre of Excellence in Singapore and he subsequently led the worldwide social media marketing team to drive strategy, content, analytics, listening and social technologies across all parts of the business. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the company’s global analytics hub. He is a regular speaker at conferences in Asia and internationally as well as a judge for a number of international marketing and digital award shows. He has been named by The Holmes Report as one of Asia Pacific’s top 25 Innovators in 2016.

 

Mr Alvin Yapp

Director & Head of Corporate Affairs, BusAds Pte Ltd

As Head of Corporate Affairs at BusAds Pte Ltd, Mr Alvin Yapp is responsible for delivering upon clients’ expectations and ensuring satisfaction. The secret to his success and attaining that consistent result lies in his personal benchmark for exceeding expectations from the very beginning.

Having worked with Singapore Airlines for nearly a decade, he has gained expertise in service excellence. This has led him to strive in ensuring that his staff continusly engage in high standards of service. BusAds, a family business, is a premier printing company providing innovative printing services. Founded by his father, today the Yapp family has over 40 staff. Their printing solutions have inspired many and won awards and accolades such as the prestigious Asian Print Award 2012 (Silver), 2013(Platinum and Gold) and 2014 (Gold).   Amongst BusAds’ esteemed clients are major media owners like SMRT Media, Moovemedia and MediaCorp and government agencies such as LTA and PUB.

As a 2nd generation SME leader, Alvin is frequently interviewed by the mainstream media Straits Times, Channel News Asia and My Paper for comments relating to HR.  He also contributes to leading HR magazines like Human Capital and is a familiar speaker at International HR conferences such as the Annual HR Transformation and Service Delivery Summit, Singapore HR Congress and Business-Connect Exposition on how to manage family businesses in a global business environment.

Alvin is also the founder of The Intan, an award-winning Peranakan private home museum. The Intan has won many accolades over the years including Best Tour Experience (2016) and Best Museum Experience (2011) by Singapore Tourism Awards. 
In 2009, Alvin was honored with JCI Top Outstanding Young Persons of Singapore Award and 2012 Singapore HR Leading CEO Award.  Alvin has also been the Ambassador for Singapore Children’s Society since 2014.  More recently, Alvin is awarded the President’s Voluntary and Philanthropy Award 2017.

 

Mr Lai Mun Loon

Head of Professional Services & Manager of Mediation Services, Eagles Mediation and Counselling Centre

Mr Lai Mun Loon is the Head of Professional Services, and concurrent Manager of Mediation Services in EMCC. A social worker by training, he lends a social work perspective to the family mediation work in EMCC. He handles highly conflicted and emotionally-charged family and relational disputes in EMCC. An extremely perceptive and inquisitive person, he is often called upon by fellow social workers to lend his opinion on cases where clients are in a gridlock, where he shares his insights with his cross training in social work, conflict management and mediation.

Mun Loon is known to be a talented orator who is objective and clear, and is a sought-after speaker, trainer and mentor by individuals and organizations in the area of conflict management, relationships and marriages. Mun Loon holds a Bachelor in Social Work from Monash University (Australia). He is also trained, assessed and accredited in Mediation and Psychotherapy by the Regent’s College School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology (UK). Mun Loon has also been trained to Level 2 in the Gottman Method Couples’ Therapy, and is an accredited Gottman Educator for ‘The Seven Principles in Making Marriage Work’ and ‘Bringing Baby Home’ programmes by The Gottman Institute (USA). He is also accredited to administer the customized couple assessment Prepare/Enrich and is a certified Behavioural Consultant accredited to administer the DiSC suite of profiling instruments. He is currently a Doctor of Jurisprudence candidate in Singapore’s third Law School.

Mun Loon is a strong believer in Mediation, and serves in the Society of Mediation Professionals (Singapore) to promote the professionalisation and standards of Mediation in Singapore.  He also volunteers on 2 other Boards of non-profit organisations. Mun Loon is happily married with two young sons who keep him very busy at home.
