GEM1008 - Evaluating Academic Arguments
This is a General Education module open to students in all faculties.
It is a 36-hour module taught over 12 weeks with ONE three-hour tutorial per week.
Objectives
By the end of the module the students should be able to:
- apply informal logic to arguments in academic readings;
- evaluate arguments in a variety of sources to help them apply the skill of argumentation in writing in their discipline; and
- write critical and logical responses to arguments in formats ranging from critiques to position papers.
Assessment
GEM1008 is a 100% Continuous Assessment module.
Students are required to write a critique and position paper, and sit for an open book test at the end of the module.
Prerequisites
- If students are required to take ES1000, Basic English, and/or ES1102, English for Academic Purposes, they must complete those modules before taking this course.
- EG1413 or ES1531
Preclusions
- This course is not open to students who offer Philosophy either as a major or minor subject.
- Students cannot take ES1531 concurrently.
