Designed for graduate students of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department, ES5101 is a module that aims to prepare students to write for publication and to give oral presentations of their academic work. In this module, besides discussing the general characteristics of academic writing, students will have the opportunity to explore and become familiar with the style and conventions of academic writing in their own discipline. In addition, the differences between written and oral discourse will be investigated, with a focus on presenting academic material to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences.
During this module, students will develop their competence in the following areas:
1. Writing for publication
This includes analyzing followed by
a) planning and organizing a research-based article,
b) writing an abstract,
c) reading, reviewing and critiquing research-based articles, and
d) using formal academic conventions.
2. Delivering oral presentations to academic and non-academic audiences
This entails appreciating the differences between a written academic paper and a conference presentation, as well as learning how to shape and present the same content as a publishable written text and an oral presentation to both technical as well as non-technical audiences (i.e., corporate management).
ES5101 is a 100% Continuous Assessment module.
