ES2007S - Professional Communication

This intermediate level module is open as an elective mainly to 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates from Engineering and Science faculties but students from other faculties may also bid for this module.

For students from Computer Engineering it is a required module.

It is a 48-hour module taught over 12 weeks with 2 two-hour tutorials per week.

The module is designed to prepare undergraduates for professional communication needs at the workplace. With this aim in mind it trains students to deliver polished oral presentations, write purposeful business correspondence including resumes and application letters, engage in interpersonal and intercultural communication and present their unique ‘personal brands’ in professional contexts.

Objectives

By the end of the module the students should be able to:

  • understand and apply the principles of professional communication to a variety of professional/ workplace contexts;
  • apply a variety of appropriate strategies to project their unique ‘personal brands’ in both their oral and written communication exchanges with others at the workplace; and
  • customize their oral and written messages in a clear, appropriate and persuasive manner to suit specific purposes, audiences and contexts.

Assessment

ES2007S is a 100% Continuous Assessment module.

Prerequisites

If students are required to take ES1000, Basic English and/or ES1102, English for Academic Purposes, they must complete those modules before taking this course.

Modular Credits

  • ES2007S is a 4 Modular Credit course for Years 2, 3 and 4 students who can read it as a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory module.
  • The module can also be used as a breadth requirement or unrestricted elective for Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering students.
