ES1000 - Basic English Course

This is a required module for students whose Qualifying English Test results show that they need help with basic English language skills, especially with regard to grammar and writing.

It is a 48-hour module taught over 12 weeks with 2 two-hour tutorials per week.

The course is offered in partial fulfilment of the University’s English language requirement.  Students assigned to this course must pass it before they take the next required English course, ES1102, English for Academic Purposes.

Objectives

By the end of the module the students should:

  • understand and use basic English grammar correctly;
  • be able to write coherent paragraphs;
  • be able to identify and correct a limited set of grammar errors in written texts;
  • have an improved academic vocabulary;
  • be able to read with better understanding;
  • have improved their listening and speaking ability; and
  • have developed some independent learning skills for further language learning.

Assessment

ES1000 is a 100% Continuous Assessment module.

Prerequisites

Students should have sat for the Qualifying English Test, and obtained a ‘Band 1’ result.
