EM1202 - English for Academic Purposes 2 (Music)


Description


This is a required course for students in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) whose YSTCM English Placement Test results show that they need a foundation course in English to help them meet the writing demands of their other courses.

This course is in part fulfilment of the University's English language requirements. Students assigned to this course must pass it in order to graduate.

This module is taught over 1 semester with 2 two-hour sectional teachings per week.


Objectives


This module aims to help students:

  • write expository essays through good organization and clarity of expression;
  • develop an awareness and application of grammar rules in communication;
  • summarize and synthesize reading texts for reflection and response;
  • practise critical review and critique of issues; and
  • build confidence in expressing ideas to an audience.

Assessment


EM1202 is a 100% Continuous Assessment module


Prerequisites


This module is open only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music programme. Students who score ‘Band B’ in the YSTCM Placement Test or students who have passed EM1201, English for Academic Purposes (Music) 1, are required to read this module.
