EM1002 - Foundation English Course 2

This is a required course for students in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) whose YSTCM English Placement Test results show that they need a foundation course in English to help them meet the writing demands of their other courses.

This course is in part fulfilment of the University's English language requirements. Students assigned to this course must pass it in order to graduate.

It is a 48-hour module taught over 12 weeks with 2 two-hour tutorials per week.

Objectives

This module aims to help students:

  • build their confidence in communicating with lecturers and other students;
  • develop their general vocabulary;
  • improve their writing skills (focusing on sentence and paragraph levels); and
  • understand reading strategies.

It uses a theme-based approach. Themes start with general everyday events relevant to students such as making friends, interacting with staff and lecturers, getting to know the university and its libraries, and expressing feelings and emotions.
