This course is in part fulfillment of the University's English language requirements. Students assigned to this course must pass it in order to graduate.
Objective
The course aims to help students function more effectively in English, both academically and professionally.
Format
This module helps YSTCM students write expository essays (descriptive, defining/categorizing, comparison-contrast) through good organization and clarity of expression, develop an awareness of grammar rules, comprehend music-related expository texts through reading and vocabulary-building strategies, paraphrase and summarize texts, and build confidence in expressing ideas in small group settings.
Tasks are related to what students are expected to do in their discipline, specifically in appreciating music, composers and instruments. Content and reading texts are selected in collaboration with music specialists to ensure relevance.
