Business and Technical Communication (CS2301)

Business and Technical Communication is a customized core module for School of Computing students. Students will learn to present their IT ideas, products or services in written proposals and presentations, to write persuasive business letters and effective email to clients and customers, to speak confidently at meetings and interviews. In addition, an intercultural component will introduce students to some key aspects of living and working in a multicultural workplace at home or abroad.

Objectives

By the end of CS2301, the students will be able to

  • write appropriate business letters, email messages and memos
  • write well-written and award-winning proposals
  • present IT solutions effectively and imaginatively
  • participate confidently at meetings and interviews involving IT-related matters
  • work with international clients and colleagues

Format

Students attend lectures, tutorials and teacher-student conferences in this course.

The lectures focus on the principles of oral and written communication. In addition, the lectures provide information that the students will need in order to complete their assignments. The tutorials are opportunities for the students to show how well they have understood the lecture content by creatively applying theory to case studies and business situations.

The course also provides opportunities for students to learn independently through self and peer evaluations.
