Professional Communication (ES2007D)
Objectives
This course has been designed to develop:
- an understanding of basic communication theories, intercultural communication, group dynamics, critical thinking, the role of peer review and teamwork;
- mastery of concepts and skills involved in written and oral communication;
- skills in designing and writing in a variety of genres that reaches and moves an audience
- ability to investigate, analyse, evaluate, respond to and influence ideas, beliefs, and attitudes of others.
Format
The course comprises, essentially, three main components:
- Fundamentals of Communication
- Written Communication
- Oral Communication
Lectures will be complemented by mini-lectures (student-led), tutorials, group discussions, peer and self reviews, web-based activities, writing-to-communicate workshops, and lecturer-student conferences.
Assessment
A combination of group and individual assignments will be set. Evaluation is based solely on continual assessments.
Attendance
Attendance at tutorials is compulsory.
