English for Academic Purposes (EA1101)
Objective
To equip students with skills and strategies for academic reading and writing
Specific Objectives
Reading:
To enable students to
- develop their own schema prior to reading texts
- analyse text organisation
- read for main ideas
- critically analyse content
Students are guided to work out information structures of academic texts and taught to identify devices that signal relationships between ideas. Through discussion of texts, students evaluate ideas, arrive at informed judgements and develop their own points of view.
Writing:
To enable students to
- analyse and interpret essay/examination questions
- develop logical arguments by outlining and planning their writing using relevant rhetorical structures
- critically reflect on their own writing
- revise, edit and proof-read their own writing
The writing tasks focus on academic writing skills with emphasis on exposition and argumentation. Students are guided through the composing process, namely, pre-writing strategies, drafting and revision.
Grammar:
To ensure that students are able to understand grammar rules by making them
- explain the rules through mini-presentations
- apply the rules on text editing exercises
Assessment and Examination Format
Evaluation consists of a series of continual assessment (CA) and a final written examination held at the end of the semester.
The following assignments constitute 60% of the total marks:

| Participation, Attendance, Attitude, Grammar Modular Folder | 10% |
Students should keep a grammar modular folder containing mini-presentation notes, grammar exercises and quizzes printed from IVLE.
The final written examination on editing, reading and writing strategies will constitute 40% of the total marks.
