Basic English Course (ES1000)
This English course is a required course for students whose Qualifying English Test results show that they require help with basic English language skills, especially in grammar and writing.
This course is in part fulfillment of the University’s English language requirement. Students assigned to this course must pass it to be allowed to read the next required English course, English for Academic Purposes.Objectives
The purpose of ES1000 is to help the students improve in their English skills. By the end of the course, the students will
- Understand and use basic English grammar correctly
- Be able to write coherent paragraphs
- Be able to identify and correct a limited set of grammar errors in written texts
- Have an improved academic vocabulary
- Be aware of collocations, collect and use them in writing
- Be able to read with greater understanding
- Have improved their listening and speaking ability
- Developed some independent learning skills for further language learning
Assessment
Continual Assessment (60%)
40% of the final grade will depend on the completion of the following assignments:
- Assignment 1 Paragraph 1 (5%)
- Assignment 2 Oral Presentation (10%)
- Assignment 3 A Process Paragraph (5%)
- Assignment 4 A Comparison - Contrast Paragraph (10%)
- Assignment 5 A Cause and Effect Paragraph (10%)
10% of CA is given on the basis of performance on pop grammar quizzes.
10% of the final grade will depend on independent learning and active participation, which is made up of:
- SELF Study Portfolio recording extra work in the Self-access English Learning Facility (SELF)
- Attendance, punctuality and attitude
Final Examination (40%)
The final examination at the end of the semester will consist of three parts:
- Section A: Text Editing (15%)
- Section B: Reading Comprehension (15%)
- Section C: Three paragraphs (70%)
