General Information
This module is open only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music programme from AY 2009/10 onwards. Students who score Band D in the YSTCM Placement Test or students who have passed Foundation English Course 1 are required to read this module.
This course is in part fulfillment of the University's English language requirements. Students assigned to this course must pass it in order to graduate.
Objective
This module is offered only to YSTCM students with the aims of building the students’ confidence in communicating with lecturers and other students, developing their general vocabulary, improving their writing skills (focussing on sentence and paragraph levels), and introducing them to effective reading strategies. It uses a theme-based approach. Themes start with general everyday events relevant to students such as taking the public transport, caring for the environment, describing preferences and talking about concerts.

Format
In addition, the module aims to help YSTCM students develop their general vocabulary, improve their writing skills ( focusing on sentence and paragraph levels) and introduce them to effective reading strategies. It uses a theme-based approach in facilitating language use. Themes start with general everyday events such as making friends, interacting with staff and lecturers, getting to know the libraries and the university, and expressing feelings and emotions.
