ES2007S - Professional Communication

This course teaches receptive and productive communication techniques needed in increasingly global and competitive environments. Students learn to generate and organise ideas for clear, convincing and effective oral and written messages, present these ideas with linguistic and graphic competence, and deliver messages appropriate to their audience, context and purpose. The topics covered are: communication fundamentals, including interpersonal, intercultural and nonverbal, and the language, format, content, organisation, and focus of different types of oral and written communication. Evaluation comprises continual assessment (100%).

Modular Credits: 4

Workload: 0-4-0-3-3

Prerequisites: Students required to take ES1000 and ES1102 must pass these modules before taking ES2007S.

Preclusion(s): CG1413, CS2101, ES2002, ES2007D, IS2101


Aims & Objectives

By the end of the course, you should:

  • understand the basic principles of good communication;
  • be able to employ a variety of appropriate strategies in order to make a favorable impression and successfully exchange ideas with others;
  • know how to plan, construct and produce "professional" messages that are clear, convincing and fitting to audience, context, and purpose.

Prerequisites

ES2007S is a 4 Modular Credit course for Years 2, 3 and 4 students who can read it as a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory module. The module can be used as a breadth requirement or unrestricted elective for Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering students.


Assessment

For 2010-2011, evaluated assignments and behaviors (100%) include the following:

- Peer Teaching (10%)
- Application Letter (10%)
- Proposal (10%)
- Proposal Discussion (10%)
- Oral Presentation (20%)
- Oral Interaction (20%)
- E-portfolio (20%)

There is no final exam.
