Academic Expository Writing
FASS writing modules will teach students to plan, draft, and revise their ideas in order to enter a conversation on a particular topic that has attracted scholarly attention. More specifically, students will analyze this conversation for understandings of the topic, illuminate neglected aspects of these understandings, and argue with reasons and evidence developed from their analyses if/how/why these alternative understandings are likely to advance our knowledge of the topic under discussion. Each module will be built around a set of readings and writing assignments focused on the topic. Although each topic reflects the concerns of a particular discipline, all modules introduce students to principles and strategies that will help them write throughout their academic careers
ES1201L - Language and Migration
![]() | Courses for Arts & Social Sciences |
Beatriz Lorente and Gene Navera
This course examines the relationship between language and migration. What does it mean to live life in a new language? What are the different kinds of migration and how well do the languages of different migrants travel? Why are languages not equally mobile? In small, interactive classes, students will explore these questions through the lenses of a wide range of texts from autobiographies to movies to scholarly articles. Students will be encouraged to develop their own informed views regarding the issues and they will be guided in making the rhetorical decisions that best argue their view in writing.
